research

The Bendheim Center for Finance has developed an outstanding reputation in the academic world within a few years. It benefited from the fact that the research focus of the Bendheim Center, the imperfections of the financial markets and financial market economics, gained rapidly in influence after the dot-com bubble burst in 2000. A similar role was played by empirical research on real estate markets and research on the consideration of the financial sector and financial frictions in models of money and macroeconomics . These models were central to the realignment of money and macroeconomics, financial market regulation , and the design of the architecture of international financial markets after the global financial crisis from 2007.

courses

The Bendheim Center for Finance supports both bachelor and master students as well as doctoral students in research and academic teaching .

Undergraduate Certificate in Finance

Students of all disciplines at Princeton University can earn a Certificate in Finance at the Bendheim Center during their undergraduate studies . The admission requirements for this program require a basic knowledge of mathematics , probability theory , and statistics . Students must complete a compulsory course in Asset Pricing and Corporate Finance . The elective courses deal with the areas of behavioral finance , data science , portfolio theory , money and banking , financial crises , risk management , IT in finance, public policy , ethics in finance and the Chinese economy . The Bendheim Center also offers its students a mentoring program which, among other things, provides contacts to alumni . Around 90 students are currently taking part in the “Undergraduate Certificate in Finance” program. Around two-thirds of these students are enrolled in economics . The other students come from the fields of computer science , history , mathematics and engineering .

Master in Finance

The Master in Finance course is primarily aimed at students who are striving for a career in the field of asset management , securities trading , risk management , fintech , macroeconomic and financial forecasting , or applied financial market research. The master’s degree usually lasts four semesters, but can be shortened to two semesters if you have sufficient prior knowledge. The course places particular emphasis on imparting knowledge in financial market economics , data analysis and technology, and computational economics. Since quantitative methods represent the focus of the courses, the course is also interesting for students with a great deal of prior knowledge, such as physicists . Around 35 students are accepted into the course every year. This corresponds to a quota of around 5 percent of the applications. The New York Sun described the program as a popular alternative to an MBA , particularly for future careers in securities trading or hedge funds .

Ph.D. program

The Bendheim Center for Finance does not offer its own Ph.D. Program. But it is the contact point and home for PhD students interested in finance , for example from the fields of economics , operations research , and mathematics . The Bendheim Center supervises the doctoral students and offers courses in finance and related areas. In addition, the institute organizes a weekly research seminar for doctoral students.

Seminars, lecture series, and conferences

In addition to the student research seminar, the Bendheim Center for Finance also organizes a weekly finance seminar and the “Princeton Finance Lectures” series. This series of lectures is given every year by an economist who is outstanding in the field of finance. In recent years these have been Raghuram Rajan , Jeremy Stein, Ben Bernanke , Andrei Shleifer , Robert Shiller , Robert F. Engle , Robert C. Merton , and Lars Peter Hansen . The Bendheim Center for Finance also organizes regular conferences. In the past, for example, they dealt with the worsening financial market risks in China and fintechs . The institute is also involved in organizing the Princeton Initiative: Macro, Money and Finance every year. This initiative brings together around 75 outstanding doctoral students from numerous universities to familiarize them with the latest research results in the interface between money, financial market and macroeconomics . In the “Career Speaker Series”, guests from industry, governments or research-related institutions address a variety of topics. These lectures are aimed at both undergraduate and postgraduate students .
