Benesch von Weitmühl (Czech: Beneš Krabice z Veitmile ; † July 27, 1375 ) was a Bohemian historian and canon . He also worked under Emperor Charles IV as the head of the construction works at St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague .

Life

Benesch Krabice von Weitmühl came from the Bohemian noble family Weitmühl . He studied canon law and entered the clergy at an early age. From 1341 he belonged to the Prague cathedral chapter and in 1355 he became head of the construction works at St. Vitus Cathedral. In addition, the administration of the construction finance was entrusted to him. After 1363 he became archdeacon of Saaz . From 1373-1374 he was responsible for the transfer of the remains of the Bohemian dukes and kings and the Prague bishops to St. Vitus Cathedral.

For his services to the progress of the construction work on St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague, a stone-carved bust of Bensch von Weitmühl was placed in the triforium of the cathedral, an open gallery below the windows of the choir .

Another task assigned by Emperor Charles IV was the continuation of the Chronica Boemorum des Cosmas of Prague by Benesch von Weitmühl. This continuation of a chronicle of the Kingdom of Bohemia , written in Latin, covered the period from 1278 to 1374. It was divided into four volumes and is preserved in a single manuscript, probably revised after his death, which was published in 1884 by Josef Emler .

  • The first three volumes of this chronicle cover the period from 1283 to 1346. It is an almost literally copied chronicle by Franz von Prag , who for his part knew and copied the Königsaal chronicle of Abbot Peter von Zittau as a source . In some places Benesch von Weitmühl made historically valuable additions or corrections.
  • The fourth volume deals with the years 1346 to 1378. It contains an autobiography of Emperor Charles IV and a short version of the biography of the first Prague Archbishop Ernst von Pardubitz . A subsequent final part, begun in Benesch's last two years, remained unfinished.
