from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Peter von Zittau ( Czech Petr Žitavský ; * around 1275 in Zittau ; † 1339 in Königsaal ) was a Bohemian writer and chronicler and since 1316 abbot of the Cistercian monastery Königsaal .

Career

Peter, who came from Zittau, then part of Bohemia, entered the Cistercian monastery Königsaal , south of Prague , between 1297 and 1305 , which was founded in 1292 by the Bohemian King Wenceslaus II . In 1305 he took part in King Wenceslas's funeral in the Königsaal monastery church, which became the burial place of the Přemyslids . In 1309, Peter is documented as chaplain of the first abbot Konrad von Erfurt (abbot from 1292 to 1312 and from 1314 to 1316), whom he accompanied on many journeys in the following years, for example to the general chapter of the Cistercian order in Citeaux in 1309 . In 1313 he took part in the Italian expedition of Emperor Henry VII ( see Emperor Heinrichs Romfahrt ).

After Abbot Konrad resigned from his office in 1316, Peter became the third in the line of Abbots of the Königsaal. As head of the monastery, which was profiled as a burial place, he had close ties to the Bohemian royal family. During his tenure he arranged for the establishment of a Diplomatorium in Königsaal, which consists of 158 documents. Under the title “Liber secretorum Aulae regiae” he wrote a collection of miracles that are said to have occurred in the Königsaal since the monastery was founded. Latin sermons and religious poems have survived as further scriptures .

The authorship of the treatise “Malogranatum”, which is often attributed to him, is not documented.

Königsaaler Chronicle

Peter von Zittau is best known for the "Königsaaler Chronik" ( "Chronicon Aulae regiae" , "Zbraslaver Chronik" ), which was started by his predecessor Otto von Thuringia and is one of the most important late medieval historical sources in Bohemia. The chronicle is dedicated to the Waldsassen abbot Johann and consists of three books.
