Stella Rose Bennett (born January 30, 2000 in Gray Lynn , Auckland ), better known by her stage name Benee (formerly Bene ), is a New Zealand singer-songwriter .

Life

Stella Rose Bennett grew up in Gray Lynn, Auckland. Her musical career began in her senior year of high school. She posted covers on Soundcloud . After high school, she studied communications at Auckland University of Technology , but dropped out within just two weeks. Instead, she decided to try and make a living from music. Music producer Josh Fountain discovered her music and produced her two singles Tough Guy (2017) and Soaked (2018).

On June 28th, 2019 she released her first EP Fire on Marzz under the name Bene . She changed her name shortly afterwards to indicate how to pronounce her name, namely / ˈbɛniː /, and an artist with the same name also existed in the United States. The EP reached number 13 in the New Zealand album charts. At the New Zealand Music Awards , it won the awards for best individual artist, for the single of the year ( Soaked) , as best newcomer and best artist (pop).

In the same year, the EP Stella & Steve followed , which also reached the New Zealand charts and was also placed on the Billboard 200 for the first time . The single Supalonely starring Gus Dapperton went viral on TikTok and became her first world hit.
