Benzbromaron is a drug used to treat high uric acid levels ( hyperuricemia ), the symptom-free intervals of gout and chronic gout .
Benzbromaron inhibits the tubular reabsorption of uric acid . This is increasingly excreted ( uricosuric effect ), whereupon the uric acid concentration in the blood drops. Benzbromaron is also used in combination with allopurinol , which, however, does not have any clear advantages over monotherapy, as the active metabolite of allopurinol, oxipurinol, is also increasingly excreted.
As side effects of uricosuric drugs, insoluble uric acid salts can form in the kidneys and urinary tract .
To support the long-term therapy, a low-purine diet and weight reduction as well as the avoidance of alcohol are recommended .
