Extraction and presentation

Benzyltrimethylammonium chloride is made by reacting benzyl chloride and trimethylamine in absolute ethanol . In addition, a reaction with benzyldimethylamine and methyl chloride , with or without a solvent , can be used to prepare this compound. It can also be made by dissolving benzyl chloride in diethyl ether and adding 25% trimethylamine in methanol .

Benzyltrimethylammonium chloride is a flammable, hardly ignitable, hygroscopic , crystalline, colorless solid with a characteristic odor, which is easily soluble in water. It decomposes when heated, producing ammonia and hydrogen chloride .

use

Benzyltrimethylammonium chloride is an economically important catalyst . The compound is used as an antistatic agent , cleaning agent , softener for textiles and in paper products.
