The buttercup rabbit's ear ( Bupleurum ranunculoides ), also known as the mountain rabbit's ear , is a member of the umbellifers family (Apiaceae) that is only found in parts of Central Europe.

The name Mäuseöhrli is also used as a common name for the Bernese Oberland .

Appearance

The Crowfoot Hasenohr is usually 5 cm high growing to 30 perennial , herbaceous plant . It is completely bare, blue-green in color and often has the remains of dead leaves at the bottom.

The stem, which usually grows simply, has lanceolate, linear leaves in the lower area, the upper ones are greatly broadened and often more or less encompassing the stem. They are narrowed for heart or egg-shaped reasons.

The umbel is usually 5 to 7-rayed. The shell is three-leaved. The husk leaves are broadly elliptical in shape, pointed and usually five-leaved. They are yellowish-green in color and are longer than the dome. The crown is yellow and often tinged with red.

The fruit has a length of about 2.5 to 3.5 mm and is covered with mostly threadlike ribs.

The buttercup rabbit's ear blooms mainly in July and August.

The species has chromosome number 2n = 14, 28 or 42.

Distribution and location requirements

The species occurs in the mountainous areas of southern and central Europe. To the east it penetrates to Kamchatka and further to Alaska.

In Germany, the buttercup rabbit's ear is very rarely found in the Allgäu and eastern Alps. In the Vorarlberg part of the Allgäu Alps, the species rises at the summit of the Diedamskopf up to 2075 m above sea level, the deepest occurrence is there at 1100 m on the Zipfelschrofen in Bavaria.

In Austria the species occurs very rarely scattered or in certain areas.

In Switzerland the occurrence is limited to the Jura region.

Bupleurum ranunculoides grows in subalpine and alpine stone lawns. It prefers fresh, mostly lime-rich and more or less stony loamy soils. It is a character species of the Seslerio-Caricetum sempervirentis, but also occurs in societies of the class Thlaspietea.

The buttercup rabbit's ear can be attacked by the rust fungus Aecidium schroeppelianum with spermogonia and acidia .

Subspecies

One can distinguish the following subspecies:

  • Bupleurum ranunculoides subsp. ranunculoides
  • Bupleurum ranunculoides subsp. telonense (Timb.-Lagr.) Coste : It occurs only in France.

Some authors also distinguish a subspecies Bupleurum ranunculoides subsp. gramineum (Vill.) Hayek (Syn .: Bupleurum ranunculoides subsp. caricinum (DC.) Arcang. ) It occurs in the Pyrenees, in the Apennines, in the Southern Alps and in the former Yugoslavia.
