Berg , also Berch , is the name of an originally Baltic noble family .

history

The family first appeared with nobilis Bernhardus van dem Berge , who is believed to have come to Oesel from Westphalia at the beginning of the 15th century . In 1490 his son Gories van dem Berge , a vassal of the order, appeared as a witness in a dispute between the city of Riga and Peter Wetberg , the bishop of Oesel.

The secured family line begins with Bernhard Berg († after 1562), Stiftsvogt zu Arensburg , who was raised to imperial nobility in Brussels with his brother Niclas in 1531 . The two brothers are possible sons of the above Gories (1490).

In 1561 the family in Wilna received the Polish Indigenous . This line provided Jan Berg († 1665) with a Starost to Rajgród , his son Wladyslaw Berg († 1710) was castellan in Livonia around 1680 . The family was wealthy at Sēlpils , Schönberg and Prezma. Konstancja Berg was the last member of this line towards the end of the 19th century.

Among the sons of the above bailiff, the sex was divided into the lines Carmel († 1759) and Clausholm - Müllershof (still flourished in the interior of Russia in 1935).

The family excelled in the military, but was also able to occupy important civil offices. Such was Friedrich Johann Gustav von Berg (* 1756, † 1821) in the years 1792-1797 marshal .

The family is particularly the equally historic Estonia encountered Mountain adH Kattentack and mountain adH Kandel to distinguish. These two sexes also have a black eagle in their shields, which does not exclude a tribal relationship, but this has not been proven. The mountain treated here were u. a. wealthy on Carmel, they are therefore also called Berg adH Carmel to distinguish them .
