history

Berg was first mentioned in 1448 as a late medieval court establishment under the name op dem Berge . In the original cadastre it is recorded as Aufm Berg south of Oberste Asselborn . The church pew ordinance (“Ordinance of the churches benches dahier zo Herkenrath”) from 1630 names it guit uff dem berg . The name of the settlement is derived from the Old and Middle High German "berc" (= mountain) and refers to the topographical location on an elevation.

From the chart of the Duchy of Berg in 1789 by Carl Friedrich von Wiebeking, it is clear that Berg was part of the Herkenrath Honschaft in the Porz office at that time .

Under French administration between 1806 and 1813, the Porz office was dissolved and Berg was politically assigned to Mairie Bensberg in the canton of Bensberg . In 1816 the Prussians converted the Mairie to the mayor's office in Bensberg in the Mülheim am Rhein district .

The place is recorded on the topographical survey of the Rhineland from 1824 without a name and on the Prussian first survey of 1840 as a mountain . From the Prussian new admission in 1892, it is regularly recorded on measuring table sheets as a mountain or without a name.

Due to the Cologne Act , the city of Bensberg was merged with Bergisch Gladbach to form the city of Bergisch Gladbach with effect from January 1, 1975. Berg also became part of Bergisch Gladbach.
