Bergheim was first mentioned in a document in 1061.

On February 1, 1971, as part of the regional reform in Hesse, the community voluntarily joined the city of Spangenberg, at that time with 329 inhabitants.

The local advisory board consists of 5 people, all of whom belong to the Bergheim community list. In the 2011 local elections , the turnout was 62.6%. The Bergheim mayor is Peter Steinbach.

Club life is lively in Bergheim. There is the Bergheim volunteer fire brigade , the mixed choir and the “Schwalbe” hiking club. The people of Bergheim are called "donkey drivers" because they used to be responsible for providing a new donkey when a well donkey died at Spangenberg Castle .
