Berlin eastside

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Berlin eastside is a commercial and industrial area in the Berlin districts of Marzahn ( Marzahn-Hellersdorf district ), Lichtenberg , Alt-Hohenschönhausen and Neu-Hohenschönhausen ( Lichtenberg district ). With 1200  hectares it is the largest contiguous commercial area with fully developed properties, commercial and office space as well as logistics in Berlin. A total of 15 business parks with over 2500 resident companies, mainly production-oriented industrial companies, belong to Berlin eastside.

Development of the commercial area

In the 19th and 20th centuries, the districts of Lichtenberg and Hohenschönhausen as well as the former suburbs of Marzahn and Hellersdorf became important business locations through the settlement of well-known factories such as Siemens & Halske , the Berolina margarine works or Hasse & Wrede .

As early as the GDR era, the Lichtenberg district had a large industrial area with an area of around 285 hectares around Herzbergstrasse , Josef-Orlopp-Strasse and Siegfriedstrasse. Mainly factories for electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and the energy industry had settled there. The VEB Elektroprojekt und Anlagenbau Berlin (Elpro) and VEB Elektrokohle Lichtenberg were among the most important large companies .

With the reunification and the associated privatization , an industrial and commercial structural change began. Numerous companies had to close. In order to preserve some business locations in the 1990s, the development of the industrial areas of Marzahn-Hellersdorf and Lichtenberg was pushed through the infrastructural development of the areas with GA funds (today: GRW - joint task "Improvement of the regional economic structure").

Territory management

In 2008, the two district offices of Marzahn-Hellersdorf and Lichtenberg formed a public-private partnership (PPP) project together with three private landowners to strengthen the location and to market it . Under the name of Gewerbeareal Berlin eastside, the commissioned area management, consisting of communication office Dr. Hagemann GmbH and regionomica GmbH , common interests and initiated joint projects for location marketing . By December 2011, the area management implemented various measures to promote the location.

The number of private partners increased to five companies in the first three years of the project. These companies included: ORCO-GSG , DOBA Autovermietung und Service GmbH , Knorr-Bremse as well as Berliner Wasserbetriebe and IKEA .

Clean Tech Business Park

With the support of the Berlin Senate and the Berlin Partner GmbH business development agency, the Marzahn-Hellersdorf district is promoting the development of the clean tech industry in the Eastside Berlin industrial estate . A previously undeveloped 90-hectare property was prepared with investment costs of around 40 million euros so that a specialized commercial and industrial area for companies in the fields of photovoltaics , renewable energies (wind power, biomass) and energy efficiency was created. The development of the areas began in 2009 and a new road network has been created.

A modern information pavilion on the site has been a contact point for companies willing to settle since 2015. By the end of 2019, the district administration, together with the approval of new funding, will conduct an intensive marketing campaign for production companies that would not be permitted in normal commercial areas and require special infrastructural requirements.

The Clean Tech Park area is accessed via S-Bahn lines: the Mehrower Allee , Raoul-Wallenberg-Straße and Marzahn stations are located eastward along Märkische Allee, while the Gehrenseestraße S-Bahn station is located to the west at the intersection of Bitterfelder Straße / Hohenschönhauser Straße and Gehrenseestraße .
