from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Berlin Institute for Empirical Integration and Migration Research (BIM) is a research facility of the Humboldt University in Berlin . It was founded in April 2014 by the non-profit Hertie Foundation , the German Football Association , the Federal Employment Agency , the Federal Government Commissioner for Migration, Refugees and Integration and the Humboldt University in Berlin.

Focus and positions

The goal of BIM is the scientific study of the dynamics of migration , integration , In - and exclusion in postmigrantischen companies , with the analytical perspective about the Migrant 'is also extended to the entire society. An interlinking of empirical basic research with theories of migration and integration research is intended to contribute to a critical reflection and objectification of the established discourses on the topics of immigration, belonging, discrimination and racism.

history

The establishment of the BIM goes back to the initiative of the non-profit Hertie Foundation, which carried out a nationwide and non-public competition to determine the location, whereby the application of the Humboldt University prevailed. The initiative was accompanied by the aim of founding an institute that bundles empirical research in the subject area and the disciplines involved and that can also act as a contact for politics. The BIM started its work with a press conference on April 2, 2014.

organization

The BIM is divided into eight departments, an office and an institute management. The BIM is an interdisciplinary center of the Humboldt University of Berlin. The Center Council consists of elected members of the status groups professors and research assistants. A general assembly represents the body of the members. A board of trustees accompanies the work of the BIM. The Board of Trustees was chaired by Minister of State Aydan Özoğuz , who is also the Federal Government's Commissioner for Migration, Refugees and Integration. From June 2018, Minister of State Annette Widmann-Mauz took over the chairmanship of the board of trustees. Eight departments are located in the BIM, which bring their research knowledge from different institutes in Berlin and whose methods and theories - from the social, cultural and educational sciences to sports science to psychology and medicine - ensure the transdisciplinarity of the institute:

  1. Basic scientific questions on integration and migration (Head: Gökce Yurdakul and Martin Kroh )
  2. Labor market, migration and integration (Head: Johannes Giesecke and Martin Kroh )
  3. Education and Integration (Head: Petra Stanat)
  4. Integration, social networks and cultural lifestyles (Head: Wolfgang Kaschuba )
  5. Integration, sport and football (Head: Sebastian Braun)
  6. Migration, Mental and Physical Health and Health Promotion (Head: Andreas Heinz )
  7. Integration Research and Social Policy (Head: Naika Foroutan )
  8. Economic integration and migration research (Head: Herbert Brücker )

The BIM is currently managed by Herbert Brücker (Director) and Naika Foroutan (Director). The office is managed by Damian Ghamlouche as scientific director.

Main focus of the BIM departments

  • The "Integration, Sport and Football" department focuses on modern sport and especially modern football in the context of social change. With particular reference to international integration, social capital and civil society research, the cultural, social and political significance of (soccer) sport as an institutional intermediary in social integration processes is analyzed.
  • In the “Labor Market, Migration and Integration” department, processes of integration into the labor market are described and analyzed. One focus of the department is the interdependence between gender and migration in the production of inequalities in the labor market. Against the background of the structural change in the German labor market, the question arises as to what effects migration has on the German labor market and to what extent the change in employment influences inequalities between people with and without a migration background. The department cooperates with the German Institute for Economic Research .
  • The department “Integration, Social Networks and Cultural Lifestyles ” researches the everyday orientations and lifeworld connections of social actors in the migration society . This orientation is intended to make it clear that it is no longer just about traditional ethnic or national affiliations, but above all about the changing classifications of people and groups to social environments and cultural lifestyles.
  • The department “Basic Scientific Questions on Integration and Migration” deals with theoretical-conceptual and empirical-methodological basic questions of integration and migration research .
  • The "Education and Integration" department examines the conditions for acquiring skills and the educational success of adolescents from immigrant families.
  • The public and global (mental) health research focused by the department “Migration, Mental and Physical Health and Health Promotion” deals with diversity-specific aspects of the prevalence , etiology , symptomatology , therapy and prevention of diseases in people from different sociocultural contexts. Further research focuses are health promotion, the effects of social exclusion on health, the conceptual further development of care concepts for socially disadvantaged groups, their implementation and the evaluation of effectiveness at the level of those affected and experts.
  • The department “Integration Research and Social Policy” works on theoretical integration research in the social science field and compares international integration concepts and integration policies in heterogeneous societies and examines the political effects on postmigrant society as a whole.
  • The department "Economic Integration and Migration Research" examines global and European migration processes, aspects of economic integration and the consequences of migration from a micro and macroeconomic perspective.
