Bernhard Cibis (born June 28, 1946 in Haßfurt ; † June 27, 2002 in Bamberg ) was a German object artist , painter , draftsman and graphic artist .

life and work

Bernhard Cibis attended after high school in Hassfurt the Munich Art Academy . There he experienced the beginning of the 1968 movement up close and was shocked by the conservative teaching. He was therefore less concerned with the fine arts than with the theories of social sciences , politics , sociology , philosophy , history and modern media. In 1972, while still a student, he married his girlfriend Barbara. After a backpack tour through South America together, Cibis worked from 1975 to 1987 as an art teacher at the Siebold High School in Würzburg .

Until the beginning of the 1980s he did not have his own studio and therefore mainly created small-format works, such as collages and alienated toy figures, which addressed current problems: factory farming , environmental destruction , military conflicts, nuclear waste and the rampant industrialization . In his object art , he dealt with similar topics and modern medicine .

His work that was critical of society was not well received in Würzburg, he felt  restricted in the episcopal city on the Main and therefore decided to live in Ndanda, Tanzania for some time (1987–1990) . During this period he created about a hundred steles from ebony , about 1000 works on paper and painted 100 canvases. In doing so, he no longer cared about the rules of composition, which he perceived as “ballast of art history knowledge”, but was inspired by the rich variety of colors and shapes in Africa.

After his return to Franconia , he lived with his family in Bamberg and worked as a freelancer. He took on the exterior and interior design for two Munich banks, worked as an artistic consultant for the renovation, and designed furniture, switches, light objects and a fountain. Here, Plexiglas was one of his preferred materials, and he valued its versatility.

In 1992 Cibis taught and worked for four weeks at the Art School in Quito , Ecuador . He found the mentality, language and joie de vivre of the population to be positive and his works from this period are also characterized by even stronger, but at the same time lighter colors than in Africa.

From 1994 Bernhard Cibis taught art again at the Kaiser-Heinrich-Gymnasium in Bamberg and drew a first artistic balance in the exhibition "Virus Blau" in the Bamberg city gallery Villa Dessauer . At the same time he discovered spring steel for himself and explored the artistic possibilities of this material in numerous objects, which enabled him to integrate accidental and deliberate movement and noises into his art.

The exhibition “Color.Light - Art under Power” in 1999 in the Städtische Galerie Würzburg was probably one of the highlights of his career. One of his light objects was presented under one roof with works by internationally renowned artists such as Dan Flavin , Mauricio Nannucci and Bruce Nauman .

A short time later he became seriously ill and died at the age of 55.
