Bernhard Neugebauer

Bernhard Neugebauer (born January 29, 1932 in Glatz , Lower Silesia Province ; † October 14, 2015 in Hamburg ) was a German diplomat and politician ( SED ). He was Ambassador and Deputy Head of the Permanent Mission of the GDR to the UN in New York and Deputy Foreign Minister of the GDR.

Life

Neugebauer studied 1951-1953 jurisprudence at the German Academy of Law and Political Sciences in Potsdam-Babelsberg with a degree in lawyer.

From 1953 he was a member of the diplomatic service in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the GDR (MfAA). He was personal assistant to the deputy foreign minister and from 1958 to 1961 first secretary at the embassy of the GDR in Prague . From 1963 to 1966 he worked for the Permanent Mission of the GDR to the UN Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) in Geneva . In 1969 he took over the management of the International Organizations Department at the MfAA. From 1970 to 1972 he studied at the Institute for International Relations in Moscow . From 1973 to 1977 he was envoy and deputy head of the Permanent Mission of the GDR to the UN in New York and from 1977 to 1978 head of the Department of International Economic Organizations at the MfAA. From 1978 to 1990 he was Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of the GDR. From 1979 to 1983 and from 1986 to 1990 Neugebauer was also President of the UNESCO Commission of the GDR.

At the end of October 1980, Neugebauer traveled to Salisbury as Erich Honecker's special envoy and agreed with Robert Mugabe to establish diplomatic relations between Zimbabwe and the GDR.

When GDR membership in the UN ended with German reunification in October 1990 , Neugebauer paid a farewell visit to UN Secretary General Javier Pérez de Cuéllar .

Neugebauer was a member of the SED . He was a board member of the Association for International Politics and International Law. V.

Neugebauer died at the age of 83 and was buried in the Karlshorster and Neuen Friedrichsfelder Friedhof in Berlin-Karlshorst .
