Berthold II (Andechs)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Berthold II. ( Berthold IV. , Berchtold , Bertholf ; † June 27, 1151 ) from the house of the Counts of Andechs was Count of Dießen -Andechs- Plassenburg - Kulmbach in Bavaria and Vogt of Benediktbeuern .

Live and act

He was probably a son of Count Arnold von Dießen († 1098) and Gisela von Schweinfurt , daughter of Duke Otto III.

Berthold inherited the goods around the Ammersee and the Starnberger See and apparently also the Upper Franconian property from his father . By 1120 at the latest, he was able to succeed the Count Sigimare , bailiffs of Benediktbeuern , and thereby significantly increase his influence. He also looked after his monastery in Dießen , which he had co-founded (Vogtei 1130 documented), and had relationships with Admont , where he gave 15 Hufen in Moosburg / Carinthia when his daughter Kunigunde joined .

Count Berthold is likely to have created the family's new headquarters on the Andechser Berg immediately after 1100 . The Plassenburg (north of Bayreuth ) in turn was likely to have been built at the latest at the beginning of the 1130s ("Counts of Plassenburg" from 1137). The founding of Kulmbach , which lies at the foot of the mountain and appears in the springs from 1174, is likely to have been founded during this time .

The marriage with Sophie († 1132), daughter of Margrave Poppo II of Istria († 1103) from the House of Weimar-Orlamünde , brought property southeast of the Alps and further reputation for the first time. Sophie was of royal blood: Her paternal grandmother was Sophia, daughter of King Belas of Hungary from the house of the Arpad . The death of Sophie's brother, Margrave Poppo III. from Istria after 1141 allowed Berthold to secure the majority of his inheritance in addition to the Spanheimers and Bogeners ; thus the basis for the possessions in Carniola , Lower Styria and Carinthia was laid (1143/47 Count von Stein / Kamnik ).

From 1140 Berthold stayed as a regular guest at the court of King Konrad III. on; It was probably about the conflicts between the Andechs and the Bamberg bishops , who saw their secular rule in Upper Franconia threatened.

family

Berthold was married in his first marriage to Sophie von Istrien , daughter of Margrave Poppo II of Istria († 1103) from the house of Weimar-Orlamünde , in his second marriage to Kunigunde, daughter of Count Ekbert II of Formbach-Pitten , heiress of Formbach .
