Bombardier BiLevel double-decker car
Bombardier BiLevel double-deck coaches ( Bombardier BiLevel Coach ) are passenger coaches designed for suburban railways in North America. The cars can carry up to 360 passengers and are easily recognized by their shape with smooth octagonal sides. They have been built since 1976 and are now in the eighth generation.
These Bombardier BiLevel double deck cars should not be confused with the Bombardier MultiLevel double deck cars (also North America) and the Bombardier double deck cars (originally Waggonbau Görlitz ). All the English terms BiLevel Coach, MultiLevel Coach and Double-deck Coach used in the product names are translated into German as "double-decker coaches".
history
The original model comes from Hawker Siddeley Canada (HSC), a subsidiary of the British Hawker Siddeley group of companies, which in the 1970s designed and manufactured a replacement for their former single-story regional diesel trains on behalf of the Toronto public transport company. Metrolink (Los Angeles) was also found as a buyer for the first generation . The second generation also came from HSC and could also be placed at Trinity Railway Express and Coaster (San Diego) .
In the early 1980s, HSC teamed up with the Canadian state-owned UTDC / Can-Car ( Urban Transportation Development Corporation / Canadian Car and Foundry ) in order to be able to create a complete portfolio of offers for orders. In addition to GO-Train Toronto and Metrolink Los Angeles, the third generation could also be placed at Tri-Rail Florida. Generations four and five, on the other hand, could only be placed with the house buyer Go-Train - after the privatization of UTDC / Can-Car, the company was with the plant manufacturer SNC Lavalin , which, however, was unable to keep its expansion course and UTDC / Can-Car in 1991 Bombardier sold.
The other generations were then placed under the Bombardier brand, and the first successor generation, six, could be placed with almost a dozen transport companies. The seventh generation also found new customers, the eighth generation can only be found at the Go-Train home buyer, which also uses more than half of all trains sold.
