history
The diocese of Bacabal was on June 22, 1968 by Pope Paul VI. established with the Apostolic Constitution Visibilis natura from cessions of territory of the Archdiocese of São Luís do Maranhão and the Territorial Prelature of São José do Grajaú . It was subordinated to the Archdiocese of São Luís do Maranhão as a suffragan .
