The diocese Grajaú ( Latin Dioecesis Graiahuensis , Portuguese Diocese de Grajaú ) is in Brazil located Roman Catholic diocese based in Grajaú in the state of Maranhão .

history

The diocese Grajaú was on February 10, 1922 by Pope Pius XI. established with the Apostolic Constitution Rationi congruit from cessions of territory of the Archdiocese of São Luís do Maranhão as the territorial prelature of São José do Grajaú . The territorial prelature of São José do Grajaú was subordinated to the Archdiocese of São Luís do Maranhão as a suffragan . The territorial prelature of São José do Grajaú gave on July 22, 1939 parts of its territory to establish the territorial prelature of Pinheiro . Further territorial assignments took place on January 14, 1958 to found the Territorial Prelature Carolina and on June 22, 1968 to found the Bacabal Diocese .

On August 4, 1981, the territorial prelature of São José do Grajaú was raised to the diocese by Pope John Paul II with the Apostolic Constitution Qui ad Beatissimi Petri . The diocese of São José do Grajaú was renamed on October 9, 1984 in the diocese of Grajaú .
