The Diocese of Jalandhar (or Jullundur) ( Latin : Dioecesis Iullundurensis ) is a Roman Catholic diocese based in Jalandhar in India .
history
The beginning of the diocese is linked to the establishment of the Apostolic Prefecture of Jalandhar from parts of the diocese of Lahore . On December 6, 1971, the elevation to the diocese of Jalandhar took place.
On September 21, 2018, local Bishop Franco Mulakkal was arrested in Kochi after three days of questioning. He is accused of rape and sexual abuse of a nun 13 times ; he denies the allegations. The diocese refused to cover the costs of the criminal defense in November 2018 , Mulakkal, who had meanwhile been released on bail . The nun Lisy Vadakkayil stated in February 2019 that she had been a victim of torture and deprivation of liberty in the Catholic monastery of Muvattupuzha because of her testimony against Mulakkal .
The diocese has been administered since September 2018 by the auxiliary bishop emeritus in Bombay , Agnelo Rufino Gracias , as Apostolic Administrator sede plena . Franco Mulakkal's jurisdiction has been suspended since then. The criminal case against Mulakkal opened in August 2020.
