The diocese of Matehuala was established on May 28, 1997 by Pope John Paul II with the Apostolic Constitution Apostolicum officium from cessions of territory of the Archdiocese of San Luis Potosí and the Diocese of Ciudad Valles and subordinated to the Archdiocese of San Luis Potosí as a suffragan .
