The Roman Catholic Diocese of Port Elizabeth ( Latin Dioecesis Portus Elizabethensis , English Diocese of Port Elizabeth ) is one in South Africa situated Roman Catholic diocese based in Port Elizabeth .

history

The diocese of Port Elizabeth was established on June 18, 1818 by Pope Pius VII as the Apostolic Vicariate Cape of Good Hope from areas of the diocese of São Tomé and the territorial prelature of Mozambique . The Vicariate Apostolic Cape of Good Hope was divided into an Eastern District and a Western District on July 30, 1847 . On November 15, 1850, the Apostolic Vicariate Cape of Good Hope, Eastern District gave parts of its territory to establish the Apostolic Vicariate Natal . The Apostolic Vicariate Cape of Good Hope, Eastern District gave parts of its territory on June 4, 1886 to establish the Apostolic Vicariate Kimberley in Orange . Further assignments were made on June 12, 1923 to establish the Gariep Apostolic Prefecture and on February 20, 1929 to establish the Mission sui juris Queenstown . On June 13, 1939, the Apostolic Vicariate Cape of Good Hope, Eastern District was renamed the Apostolic Vicariate Port Elizabeth .

The Apostolic Vicariate Port Elizabeth was on January 11, 1951 by Pope Pius XII. raised to the diocese and subordinated to the Archdiocese of Cape Town as a suffragan .
