Cathedral Immaculate Conception in Saint John

The diocese of Saint John, New Brunswick was founded on September 30, 1842 by Pope Gregory XVI. established with the Apostolic Constitution Dominici gregis from cession of territory of the Archdiocese of Québec as the Diocese of Saint John in America . It was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Québec as a suffragan . The diocese of Saint John in America gave up on May 8, 1860 parts of its territory to establish the diocese of Chatham . On November 15, 1924, the Diocese of Saint John in America was renamed the Diocese of Saint John, New Brunswick . The diocese of Saint John, New Brunswick gave on February 22, 1936 parts of its territory to establish the Archdiocese of Moncton , to which it was subordinated as a suffragan.
