The diocese of Stockholm ( Latin : Dioecesis Holmiensis , Swedish : Stockholms katolska stift ) is the only Roman Catholic diocese in Sweden and extends over the entire national territory.

history

coat of arms

Before the Reformation, Sweden belonged to the Uppsala diocese , which changed its denomination in 1531. The forerunner of today's diocese of Stockholm was the Apostolic Vicariate of Sweden, founded on September 23, 1783 from the Apostolic Vicariate of the North consisting of Sweden, Norway and Finland . In 1809 the area around Finland came to the Archdiocese of Mahiljou , from which the Apostolic Vicariate of Finland was founded in 1920 . In 1855 the Vicariate gave territories north of the Arctic Circle to the new North Pole Mission , which fell back to the Vicariate when it was dissolved in 1868. On August 7, 1868, the area around Norway was given up to establish the Mission sui juris Norway . The vicariate was on June 29, 1953 with the bull Profecit valde by Pope Pius XII. elevated to a diocese two years after Sweden passed the Freedom of Religion Act in 1951.

Since November 17, 1998, Bishop of Stockholm is the first Swede of the Carmelite Anders Arborelius OCD. He was created cardinal by Pope Francis on June 28, 2017 .
