Blerim Rrustemi (born February 4, 1983 in Vučitrn , SFR Yugoslavia , today Kosovo ) is an Albanian football player who grew up in Canada and who is also a Canadian citizen.

Club career

The two-footed central defender did not join a football club until he was 17, in 2000; his first station was CS Azzurri Toronto , where he also played a few games on the combat team . Rrustemi spent the first half of the following season at Toronto Supra . For the second half of the season he went to Brazil and signed a contract with Portuguesa São Paulo . After he got to know the family of the Uruguayan football player Diego Forlán in the early stages of his career , who from then on also supported him in the course of his career, he moved to Defensor Sporting in the Uruguayan Primera División in 2002 . There he came to some first division appearances.

In the spring of 2004, Blerim was invited by Borussia Mönchengladbach for a trial training and shortly afterwards signed for the second team. The contact to the "foals" was established by his brother, who lived on the Lower Rhine and who initially also acted as his interpreter .

After the 2006/07 season, which ended with relegation to the league , Rrustemi decided to leave the club. He moved to the Danish first division club AC Horsens on a free transfer , but his contract was dissolved at the end of 2007. In the winter break of the 2007/08 season Rrustemi moved to the regional division FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt , which he left at the end of the season for Cyprus to Alki Larnaka .

Blerim Rrustemi, who can also be used in defensive midfield , is known for his aggressive style of play, which one would expect more in the English Premier League than in German amateur leagues . He himself says: "If I can't assert myself in Germany, England would definitely be an alternative."

In the summer of 2010, Rrustemi moved to the NRW League promoted FC Wegberg-Beeck. For the 2011/12 season he joined the Goslarer SC 08 from the Lower Saxony Oberliga , with whom he became champions in his first season and was promoted to the Regionalliga Nord . After two years in Goslar, the defender returned to North Rhine-Westphalia in 2013 and joined the regional league team SSVg Velbert . In the winter break of the 2013/14 season he dissolved his contract and went to Ratingen 04/19 in the Oberliga Niederrhein for the rest of the season . In the summer of 2014 he moved to the Rheydter Spielverein in the district league, where he played again with the former Mönchengladbach professionals René Schnitzler and Lawrence Aidoo . After relegation to the district league, he joined the national division SC Union Nettetal in 2015 . With the club, he rose to the Oberliga Niederrhein in 2018 , but a year later he signed a contract with the district division club 1. FC Viersen .

National team

Blerim Rrustemi was first invited to a course in February 2007 by Otto Barić , the coach of the Albanian national team. In the meantime, Rrustemi had also received Albanian citizenship. He played his first game for Albania on October 22, 2007 in a friendly against Malta (3-0). Two more missions followed by the end of the year before it was no longer considered.
