Bloody Kisses is the third studio album by the American metal band Type O Negative . It was released on Roadrunner Records in August 1993 and marked the band's commercial breakthrough. The album peaked in the US in 1995 and gold in 2000 went platinum.

Music genre

In contrast to the previous album Slow, Deep and Hard , the songs on Bloody Kisses became more accessible and melodic. Choral songs , synthesizer and organ passages were integrated into the often dark and melancholy songs . However, there are also fast, hardcore- like songs. With the piece Summer Breeze by Seals & Crofts , a soft rock song from 1972 was played in a Doom Metal -like version. The fast songs are rather short, the first two singles Black No.1 (Little Miss Scare-All) and Christian Woman are up to eleven minutes long and consist of several parts, often marked by a change in tempo. At Christian Woman these parts are named differently. The pieces often merge directly into one another. The two hardcore tracks Kill All the White People (with Phil Anselmo ) and We Hate Everyone were removed from the digipak version of May 10, 1994 and replaced by Suspended in Dusk , the B-side of the single Christian Woman (there with the Addition: "previously too embarassed to release", in German: "so far too embarrassed to publish it"). Can't Lose You is a hymn to the Beatles .

History of origin

Like the previous album , Bloody Kisses was recorded in Josh Silver's Studio Systems Two in Brooklyn . According to the booklet, in addition to the Bensonhoist Lesbian Choir , the Brooklyn Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Verdigris Philogiston (apparently a fictional person who later appears again on the album The Least Worst of ) participated. Further recordings were made in the Sty in the Sky studio . Paul Bento can be heard on the sitar and tambura . About two months after the release, drummer Sal Abruscato moved to Life of Agony , ex-roadie Johnny Kelly took over his position. After the first two singles, Summer Breeze was released in 1994 . On November 9, 1995, the album was the first to go gold on the label and platinum on December 14, 2000. In Europe especially, the band often had to defend themselves in interviews against allegations that they had represented right-wing ideas on previous releases.

Texts

In the lyrics, Gothic-Metal- typical topics such as sex, death and Christianity are partly taken up. Black No.1 has been interpreted as an ironic allusion to the Gothic Metal scene and its followers, but Steele himself related the song to personal experiences:

“Since Slow, Deep and Hard I've met a few interesting women, and I've processed a few of my experiences with the text - for example in Black No. 1 . Today I am at a point where I no longer have to make my statements with a sledgehammer, but rather approach the matter a little more sensitively. "

- Peter Steele 1993

With Kill All the White People (lyrics: "Kill all the white people / Then we'll be free", German: "Kill all Weißen / Then we will be free") and We Hate Everyone , however, one cannot speak of sensitivity: Josh Silver described the first song as "press rogues", so the pieces can be seen as a reaction to the racism allegations against the band. The band said the backing vocals for Kill All the White People sang “five of our black friends”.

reception

In Rolling Stone got Bloody Kisses a more skeptical review. Julia Szabo took a critical look at the texts. She highlighted the three singles and awarded two and a half stars out of five. Still, the album ranked 88th on the magazine's The 100 Best Metal & Hard Rock Albums Of All Time list in 2014 .

Steve Huey from allmusic.com called the record a “bigger step forward”, but also criticized lyrical “clichés”. The record sounds like a “funeral”, but breathed new life into the Gothic Metal genre. The rating was 4.5 stars out of five.

In German Rock Hard , Frank Albrecht Bloody Kisses called the "record with which Pete Steele will shut the mouth of all his opponents and envious people." He called it lyrically "flawless", praised it musically and already at that time spoke of the "album des Decade ”, which actually breaks the evaluation system. The result is ten out of ten points. In the monthly "editorial charts" the album shared number 2 with The Missing Link by Rage . In its best-of list with 500 albums, Bloody Kisses magazine placed 365th. Wolf-Rüdiger Mühlmann called the album a “long-lasting classic” with its “weeping willow romance”.

Artwork

The cover of the album shows two women who are leaning against each other with open mouths.

“You can interpret the cover to mean that these two women are dead, sleeping or having sex with each other. I don't want to reveal what I was thinking, but I like the sight. The motif is dark, mysterious and soulful at the same time. "

- Peter Steele.

When asked if the picture was an allusion to homosexuality , Steele said he had "no problem with that interpretation."
