Bob Merrill (* 1958 in New York City ) is an American jazz musician ( vocals , trumpet , flugelhorn , piano , arrangement ) and music producer , stylistically connected to swing and mainstream jazz .

Live and act

Merrill grew up in Manhattan and studied with Red Rodney as a teenager . During his college years he directed the Harvard Jazz Band , with whom he performed and toured in New England. After graduating from Harvard University with a degree in music , he continued his studies at the New England Conservatory ; during this time he played a. a. with Jaki Byard and his Apollo Stompers Big Band . In 1977 the first recordings were made with Ran Blake .

From 1981 he held seminars on jazz music as a fellow at Harvard and founded the concert series Jazz at the Pudding in the Hasty Pudding jazz club , led the house band and accompanied guest jazz greats such as Lee Konitz , Warne Marsh , Al Hibbler , Sheila Jordan and Archie Shepp . 1986 Merrill returned to New York, where he opened the recording studio Hip Pocket Studios and in the following years worked for stars such as Patti LaBelle , Sting , Art Garfunkel and Peter, Paul and Mary ; He also produced three albums there by his father-in-law Joe Bushkin , for whom he also worked as a trumpeter, musical director and arranger.
