List of grape varieties

Bobal is an important Spanish red wine variety . It is grown in the Albacete , Alicante , Cuenca and Utiel-Requena regions . It is generally processed into bulk wines with a deep dark color or rectified grape must concentrate (RTK). Occasionally, good rosé wines are also made from Bobal. In 2000, 92,630 hectares of vineyards were planted with this variety in Spain  . In Spain it is the third most popular grape variety after Airen and Tempranillo . There are suspicions that Bobal is related to the Bovale grape variety in Sardinia . Small stocks are also known in France .

The grape retains a strong acidity and has a relatively low alcohol content; it is therefore often blended with the Monastrell grape variety in wines.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is very hairy whitish with a very slightly reddish tinge. The yellowish young leaves are slightly hairy on the upper side.
  • The large leaves (see also the article leaf shape ) are usually five-lobed and strongly cupped. The stalk bay is lyre-shaped, open to closed. The leaf margin is bluntly serrated. The teeth are set wide in comparison to the grape varieties. The leaf surface (also called blade) is blistered and rough. In autumn the leaves turn red slightly.
  • The grape is medium-sized and has dense berries. The berries are medium-sized and black and blue in color. The berries are thick-skinned and juicy; the juice is colorless.

The grape variety sprouts relatively late.

Bobal is susceptible to downy mildew . The yields of the fertile strain can vary widely.

Bobal ripens around 35 days after the Gutedel and is therefore considered to ripen late.
