Robert Joseph Bare Jr. (born June 28, 1966 in Nashville , Tennessee ) is an American singer-songwriter and musician.

Life

Bare was in Tennessee Nashville, the son of singer Jeannie Bare (born sterling) and the Country musician Bobby Bare, Sr. was born. His parents met in 1963 when his father hired his mother to sing. He spent his childhood in Hendersonville, Tennessee , half an hour northeast of Nashville. The family's neighbors included Tammy Wynette and George Jones . Bare has two younger siblings. His older sister died at 15 from complications from medical treatment.

In 1974, when he was only 8 years old, Bobby Bare and his father were nominated for a Grammy for the song Daddy What If , written by Shel Silverstein . His daughter Isabella also sang a version of this song that was released on Twistable Turnable Man , a tribute album for Shel Silverstein. The album was jointly published by Bare and his father. He appeared with his siblings as a child on the television show Hee Haw to intone the witch's scream interlude in Bobby Bare, Sr. 's song Marie Laveaux .

Bobby Bare Jr. began his music career as a guitarist and songwriter. However, he only started his career as a professional musician at the age of thirty. He once characterized his attitude as someone who wanted to avoid “working in a real job at all costs”. For a while he made his living as a roadie and lighting technician. Regardless of this, smaller labels such as Immortal Records and Lost Highway offered him contracts at the beginning of his musician career .

Bobby Bare Jr. holds a degree in psychology from the University of Tennessee . He has three children - two sons and a daughter.

Solo work

His CD A Storm, A Tree, My Mother's Head was released in 2010 on his own label, 30 Tigers / Naked Albino Recordings . The title alludes to a 2008 storm in Nashville in which his mother was injured.

“Mom was sitting on the couch, the last day of January in 2008, and there was a big, windy storm outside. And a big branch broke off halfway up the tree. It fell on the house, and literally split the house in two and landed exactly on top of her. "

“Mom was sitting on the sofa on the last day of January 2008 and there was a strong, windy storm outside. A large branch broke off halfway up the tree. He fell on the house, literally split it in two and landed right on her. "

Another song on the record, The Sky Is The Ground , is about his son's bicycle accident when he was two years old.

The EP Shame on Me was released in 2014 on Big Legal Mess / Fat Possum Records . In spring 2014 his album Undefeated was released on Bloodshot Records . The album's first single, The Big Time , was pre-released in April of that year. Bare recorded the album with Mark Nevers ( Lambchop ) and Grammy- winning engineer Vance Powell ( Jack White , Alicia Keys , the Dixie Chicks , Buddy Guy ). Bare appeared in June 2014 in the opening act for Robert Pollard's band, Guided by Voices . From February 2016 he became guitarist of Guided By Voices, together with Nick Mitchell, also guitar, Mark Shue on bass and Kevin March as drummer.

Bare performs regularly at house concerts, often accompanied by Carey Kotsionis as a singer.

Music style and influences

His songs are said to have humor as well as the use of many pop cultural references. In addition, many critics characterize his songs as "original and melodic". A huge influence on his approach to songwriting was Shel Silverstein . In particular, this was the technique of first creating the texts in the form of poems and then transforming them into songs - an approach that is very similar to Silverstein's approach.
