Boghos Bedros XIII. Terzian , also Paul Petrus XIII. Terzian , (born September 1, 1855 in Kütahya , Turkey ; † December 15, 1931 ) was the thirteenth Armenian Catholic Patriarch of Cilicia . He survived the Armenian genocide and returned the patriarch's seat to Bzommar in Lebanon .
Life
Boghos Terzian was appointed Bishop of Adana in Turkey on April 8, 1855 . The Assembly of Armenian Catholic Bishops elected him on April 23, 1910 as Patriarch of Cilicia. The office was confirmed on November 27, 1911 by Pope Pius X. One of his first measures was the assembly of the Armenian Catholic Synod in Rome in 1911 , at which the jurisdiction issues were clarified and the rules of the rite were revised.
Bedros XIII. consecrated Jean Couzian ICPB as Bishop of Iskanderiya in Egypt and Jacques Nessimian as Archbishop of Mardin .
When he reached the age of 75, the patriarch retired and was the former patriarch of Cilicia until his death on December 15, 1931. From 1911 to 1928 he also held the office of Archbishop of Constantinople .
Genocide against the Armenians
The Armenian genocide in 1915 and 1916 did not leave the Armenian Catholic Church unaffected. 19 eparchies, 156 churches, 110 mission stations, 6 seminaries, 300 priests and 270 religious fell victim to it. The bishops of the Armenian Catholic eparchies Mardin , Amida , Kharput , Melitene , Mush and Prusa were murdered. Bedros XIII. had to leave Constantinople and moved the patriarchal seat to Bzommar in Lebanon. The second synod of Rome decided in 1928 to elevate Beirut to a patriarchal parish. According to this, the Patriarch of Cilicia also became Archbishop of Beirut . He was also the Apostolic Administrator of the Ispahan Eparchy in Iran .
