François-Adrien Boieldieu (born December 16, 1775 in Rouen (Normandy), † October 8, 1834 at his country estate Jarcy near Paris) was a French composer whose main importance is in the field of opéra-comique .

Life

Boieldieu was the son of the archiepiscopal secretary in Rouen and received his early musical education from Charles Broche, the organist of the cathedral in Rouen . In 1796 he went to Paris (acquaintance with Luigi Cherubini ), where he became a piano teacher at the Conservatoire in 1798 . From 1803 to 1810 he was court composer in Saint Petersburg . In 1811 he returned to Paris. In 1817 he became professor of composition at the Conservatoire de Paris , an activity that he soon had to give up for health reasons, whereupon he retired to his country estate and devoted himself to painting, living on a pension that Louis-Philippe I gave him . had promised.

He was a master of the opera comique . His over 40 operas and vaudevilles (especially Zoraime et Zulnar , 1798; The Caliph of Baghdad , 1800; Jean de Paris , 1812; The White Lady , 1825) are characterized by rich, flowing melodies and rhythmic liveliness. He also wrote chamber music , a piano concerto, and romances. He probably composed the Harp Concerto in C major in 1800 under the influence and acquaintance of Sébastien Érard , the instrument maker who used his craftsmanship not only for the piano but also for the harp . At that time Erard was probably already working on the harp's double pedal mechanism.
