The former embassy and today's consulate building, completed in 1984, is at the end of Legionsweg (house number 14) on the banks of the Rhine above the towpath .

history

After Romania and the Federal Republic of Germany had established diplomatic relations on the basis of a treaty dated January 31, 1967 , Romania opened an embassy at the seat of government in Bonn. The embassy chancellery was initially located in the Bayenthal district of Cologne on the banks of the Rhine (Gustav-Heinemann-Ufer 68), where it also had an economic and consular department. A property in the Bad Godesberg district of Plittersdorf (Germanenstrasse 8) served as the residence of the embassy, the residence of the ambassador .

When the Romanian government began to adjust to a longer presence at the seat of government in Bonn, it planned to build a new embassy office in the north of Bonn at the end of the 1970s. The new embassy building was built under President Nicolae Ceaușescu as one of the largest Romanian embassy buildings at the time, using Romanian workers. Begun in 1983 at the latest, it was completed in 1984. The establishment of the Romanian embassy prompted the Federal Ministry of the Interior , located about 500 m away on Graurheindorfer Strasse, to tighten its security standards, as eavesdropping by the embassy was feared. In the embassy there was a legal residency of the Romanian secret service Securitate , which was the starting point for attacks on emigrated nationals of the country.

In the course of the relocation of the seat of government , the Romanian embassy moved to Berlin in 2000 (→ Romanian embassy in Berlin ). A branch office of the embassy was initially left in Bonn, which was converted into a consulate general shortly afterwards . The consular district includes the states of Hesse , North Rhine-Westphalia , Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland . In addition to the consul general, the consulate general is equipped with three other consuls, a police and an economic attaché . The former embassy building is also used for cultural purposes. In spring 2017, after several years of preliminary planning, a wooden church made in Romania was built on the Rhine side of the Consulate General , which serves the Romanian Orthodox church community in Bonn and was inaugurated on December 1, 2018.
