Bounkiling is a city in southern Senegal . It is the capital of the Bounkiling department in the Sédhiou region .
Geographical location
Bounkiling is located in the center of Casamance , the part of Senegal that stretches between Gambia and Guinea-Bissau . The city is located 270 kilometers southeast of Dakar and 39 kilometers north of the Sédhiou regional prefecture . The city is located three kilometers north of Soungrougrou , which here, 120 km east of the Atlantic coast , has a width of about 850 meters under the wash-out influence of the tidal currents. In the northwest, the border to Gambia comes up to 18 kilometers.
history
The village of Bounkiling was established in 1951. In 2008 the commune (town) Bounkiling was created from the three villages of Bounkiling, Kouady and Kégnéto. The urban area extends from the gendarmerie of Bounkiling a certain number of kilometers in all four directions. This resulted in a city area of 13.4 km². At the same time, Bounkiling became the seat of a department.

Bounkiling is a stage on the national road N 4 , which branches off from the N 1 to the southeast in Kaolack , initially crossing the Saloum as a Transgambienne and passing the border with Gambia southeast of Nioro du Rip . In the neighboring country, the road is interrupted by the Gambia , which is 850 meters wide at this point . A ferry connects both banks and enables a further journey on the Transgambienne to the north and west of the southern Senegalese Casamance to Bounkiling and from here further to the southwest to the major city and port city of Ziguinchor, 85 km away . There is a connection to the national air transport network with Ziguinchor Airport .
A road to the departmental prefecture of Sédhiou crosses Bounkiling six kilometers east of the neighboring town of Madina Wandifa from the Soungrougrou to the south.
