Boyz 4 Now is the 21st episode of the third season of the American animated series Bob's Burgers . The first broadcast was on April 28, 2013 on Fox , the German-language first broadcast took place on August 9, 2015 on Comedy Central . The episode, written by Lizzie and Wendy Molyneux, is about Louise Belcher ( Kristen Schaal ), who falls in love with a member of the boy band Boyz 4 Now when she and her sister Tina ( Dan Mintz ) are at a concert for the band. In a subplot, Gene Belcher ( Eugene Mirman ) qualifies for the regional championship in table design, in which he has to set a table to match a selected topic.

The show's producers chose to design Boyz 4 Now group as a general parody of boy bands rather than picking a specific one. Loren Bouchard hired several female members of the production team to design the appearance and clothing of the band. The episode received positive reviews, especially for the main storyline, for showing a more vulnerable, feminine side of Louise and her sisterly relationship with Tina. The original version features the voices of the actors Max Greenfield and Jack McBrayer as well as the comedienne Tig Notaro as guest stars .

action

Tina's and Louise's aunt Gayle ( Megan Mullally ) got them tickets for a concert by the boy band Boyz 4 Now. Tina is thrilled, Louise agrees to accompany her at the urging of her mother Linda ( John Roberts ). Gene, who qualified for a regional table design competition, is accompanied there by his parents Linda and Bob ( H. Jon Benjamin ). However, Gayle cannot go to the concert with her nieces because she has to take her hangover to the vet. Louise is happy about it at first, but then decides to bring her sister to the concert after seeing her disappointment. The two drive together with Zeke (Bobby Tisdale) and his older cousin Leslie ( Jack McBrayer ), who want to sell fake T-shirts and hot dogs there. Bob and Linda later meet the arrogant father of Gene's competitor Oscar Anthony, which is why they dearly want Gene to win.

When they arrive at the concert hall, Louise makes fun of the band's female fans and warns Tina that it is very pubescent there. Louise initially wants to stay outside, but then accompanies Tina because she threatens to pass out. At the beginning of the concert, Louise is unimpressed by the band until the prepubescent, youngest member Boo Boo (Max Greenfield) comes on stage. She falls in love with him immediately, so that at first she is petrified and at the beginning of the first song she starts calling his name. Frightened by what she did, she leaves the room and denies that she likes Boo Boo. Meanwhile, Gene impressed the jury with his set table with magic as a theme and qualified as one of the best four for the next round. However, since he has not read the rules in full, he has not prepared a topic for the coming round.

Louise runs back into the concert hall and asks Tina questions about Boo Boo, which causes Tina to discover that Louise has fallen in love with him. Tina promises to help her and Louise mentions that she wants to punch Boo Boo in the face. After being denied access to the backstage area after the concert, they sneak into the band's tour bus and hide. During the journey Louise comes out of her hiding place, the bus driver Jody ( Tig Notaro ) then stops at a rest area. Louise hits Boo Boo in the face before she and Tina get off the bus. Gayle picks her up there, on the way home Louise thanks her sister for her help and says that she is no longer in love with him. Gene's improvised table setting on the topic of menstruation is deemed offensive by the jury, so he comes in fourth. The Belchers, however, are happy that Oscar didn't win. In the evening, Louise pulls out a poster of Boo Boo and gently slaps his face before she sleeps.

production

Actor Max Greenfield voiced boy band member Boo Boo and recorded the vocals for one of the songs in the episode.

Boyz 4 Now was written by Lizzie and Wendy Molyneux and directed by Anthony Chun. When Loren Bouchard , the show's creator, found out about the plot, he found it "such an immediately delightful story" and "a great way to let Louise peer over to the other side of puberty and into the abyss". In an interview with Rolling Stone , Bouchard named Boyz 4 Now one of his favorite episodes on the show and said he likes episodes where “Louise is a little vulnerable ... you don't want her to be as invulnerable as she claims to be. If you are trying to keep the show down to earth then you have to regularly say that this is a nine year old girl. ”He added that while the character has“ an adult sensibility on a lot of things, ”he and the scriptwriters try to“ looking for ways to bring them back to reality ”. Hence, the episode portrays Louise as "struggling against growing up" and Tina is "her weird ambassador to this world ... somehow you couldn't ask for a better advisor."

The eponymous band was written as a general parody of boy bands and not related to a specific one. Bouchard explained that this decision was not made because of concerns that the episode would be out of date, but because the writers were "made to laugh" by various boy bands. He did research, however, through the Anglo-Irish group One Direction in particular , as he “wanted to see what was trendy right now” and he “wasn't that interested in Boyz II Men or the Backstreet Boys or * NSYNC .” The authors had mixed ideas about what the band members' clothes and hair should look like, so Bouchard let "some of the many talented women working on the show who had a much stronger feeling for boy bands" decide.

Actor Max Greenfield subsequently guest-starred by lending his voice to Boo Boo, who Louise falls in love with. Steven Davis, Kelvin Yu and Scott Jacobson composed the song Will You Be Mine (Coal Mine) for the episode and recorded it before the reading rehearsal , later Greenfield recorded the vocals. The writers of Bob's Burgers later called the song their fourth favorite song in the series. Other guests on the episode include stand-up comedienne Tig Notaro as Jody, the band's tour bus driver, and actor Jack McBrayer as Zeke's older cousin Leslie.

reception

The US premiere of Boyz 4 Now was on Sunday, 28 April 2013 Fox as part of the program block Animation Domination . The episode was seen by 3.50 million viewers and achieved a rate of 1.7 / 5 in the target group of 18 to 49 year olds , making it the fourth most watched program in the program that evening. AV Club pilot Viruet rated the episode "A-" and wrote that the episode was "consistently full of funny moments." Viruet said Boyz 4 Now was particularly successful in forging Tina and Louise's relationship, noting that Louise's “three hours in love are so upset that she develops a newfound respect for Tina, who with it everyone Day has to do. ”Viruet also praised the subplot about the competition in table design and described it as“ just as laughable and absurd ”as the main storyline.

Heave Media's Matt Brassil named Boyz 4 Now the seventh best TV episode in 2013, saying that Louise's love “pervades the surface of this little girl to the woman [she] is bound to become, and the script is beginning to show how the craziest girl in a rabbit hat can be humanized. ”Phillip Maciak of the Los Angeles Review of Books called Kristen Schaal's role as Louise on Bob's Burgers his favorite TV appearance of the year and wrote about her performance on this episode:

“Schaal's handling of the anger and betrayal Louise feels as she finds herself attracting to a boy for the first time is actually quite moving. But, more than that, it opens up a new register of this top-register performance as Louise's murderous rage turns to murderous romance. "

“Schaal's handling of the anger and betrayal Louise felt the first time she became attracted to a boy is really moving. But more than that, it opens a new chapter in this top performance when Louise's murderous rage turns into murderous romance. "
