Little Brother and Little Sister is a German fairy tale film by Walter Oehmichen from 1953 . It is based on the Grimm fairy tale Little Brother and Little Sister . It is the first film adaptation of the fairy tale, which was filmed again in 2008 .

The king is very worried about his wife, the queen, who has been ill for a long time, who is not really helped by the personal physician's powders. The royal couple has two children, a brother and a sister. Above all, little brother always feels like prank and little sister goes along with everything. The siblings also have a nanny, Valentine, who likes to sleep best, which encourages little brothers and sisters to play all sorts of pranks on her again and again. If it gets too bad, she threatens to tell Black Usa everything.
The Black Usa lives in a remote area of the castle and collects herbs and spices for the castle kitchen. It looks a bit scary with her. Usa has one daughter, the one-eyed pillar. She is always dissatisfied and grumbles at her mother, even though the USA does everything for her. After an argument with the royal children, Sule runs to her mother crying and wants her to turn her into a princess. She threatens to jump out of the window if her mother doesn't grant her this wish. When she notices her mother's fear for her, she exclaims that her princess is not enough, she wants to be queen. The Black Usa is only inspired by the thought that her child is not going to pass out there on the windowsill and agrees.
At midnight by moonlight, Usa sneaks through the forest to collect herbs that she uses for her magic. When she has everything together, she returns to the castle. The Queen is now getting worse and worse. Contrary to the advice of the court doctor, the king sends to the black United States. The Queen's personal physician protests in vain when Usa, with the consent of the King, gives the Queen the medicine she has brewed. No sooner has the queen tasted it than she gets up from her bed and seems healthy. The king thanks Usa profusely and, out of gratitude, appoints her maid who will be allowed to look after the queen in the future, not realizing that Usa has prepared the medicine in such a way that it can now influence the will of the queen. Little brothers and sisters are called to their mother and are full of joy that she is so much better.
Black USA looks in her magic mirror in which she can see everything. She implores the mirror: "You have to, you have to ..." and, as if by magic, the queen gets up and goes into the forest, where she collapses at a small hut and is transformed into a thorn bush. Now the way to become queen is free for her, Usa tells her daughter and she steers her into the queen's bed. She reassures Sule that she had told the king that he was not allowed to be queen for the time being. Sule implores her mother to make sure that little brothers and sisters disappear forever. Shortly afterwards, Usa turns herself into a bird of prey. Little brother and sister follow the bird deep into the forest and get lost. The Black USA has since transformed back and enchants various sources. Back in the castle, Usa subsequently prevents the king from visiting the queen by telling the king that the queen is sleeping well.
In the forest, little brothers and sisters wake up who have spent the night in a cave. Brother is very thirsty. At the first little fountain, this says: “Whoever drinks from me will become a tiger.” Little sister asks little brother not to drink from it, otherwise it would turn into a wild animal and tear it up. Little brother is looking for another source, but it says: “Whoever drinks from me will become a wolf.” Little brother also renounces this little fountain, since little sister thinks that if he becomes a wolf, he will eat her. “Well,” is Friar's answer, but he has to drink the next little fountain. And despite the warning from the spring and sister, he bends down and drinks and immediately becomes a deer. Little sister assures brother that she will never leave him and puts her golden garter around the deer's neck in order to then look for a place to stay in the forest. She discovers a little hut without knowing that the rose bush that is just beginning to bloom in front of it is her transformed mother. There she wants to stay with little brother, who also kept his human voice as a deer, and settle down as best she can. In the evening my sister prays: “Dear God, whatever happens, protect me and my deer too, love us and lead us soon, home from this dark forest. Amen. "In front of the hut the rose bush whispers:" Dear children, good night, fear nothing, mother is on the watch. "
In the meantime it has been discovered in the castle that the siblings have disappeared and the king and his hunters roam the woods in search of them. When the deer hears the hunting horns, it really wants to go into the forest and although little sister is worried, she lets it go. When it comes back in the evening it should knock and say: "My little sister, let me in." The hunters Bimbo and Bambo see the deer and want to catch it. They follow it up to the hut. They are amazed to hear that there is a knock on the door and speak. They think they have to report this to the king. The next day the brother wants to go out again when he hears the hunting horn. Sister lets it run through tears. Now the king also sees the deer with the golden collar and orders it to be hunted all day, but not to be injured under any circumstances. Meanwhile, Bimbo and Bambo knock on the door of the hut and are invited in by their sister. Then comes my brother. The hunters bring sister and the deer to their father, the king. He comforts the crying girl and says that the deer will stay with them now and that they will love her just as much as brother in human form. Then everyone goes back to the castle. Black Usa watches from the window as the little sister and the deer enter the courtyard with the king. Immediately she forges a new plan to get rid of both of them. The enchanted queen in the forest feels the great danger her children are in, which gives her the strength to break free from the rose bush as a spirit, because the mother's love and care are stronger than the malevolences of the black United States. When Usa sees the queen in the castle, the poison falls out of her hands, with which she wanted to kill sister and the deer. The queen goes into the children's room and whispers: "What is my child doing, what is my deer doing, now I will come again and then never again." Valentine listens to this and tells the king about it. The king wakes up with her the following night. When it strikes midnight, the door opens and the queen appears: "What is my child doing, what is my deer doing, now I will come again this time and then never again." The king walks up to her, hugs her and says she can no one be different from his dear wife and kiss her on the forehead. His kiss breaks the magic power, the queen is free. Usa has lost her magic power over her. Before the eyes of the personal doctor, Usa transforms into a pig and her daughter into a piglet. Since Usa's magical power is broken, brother also transforms back. Black Usa and her daughter Sule are chased away from the castle. The personal doctor says they have now become what they always have been, pigs.
Production and Background
Little Brother and Little Sister the Schonger film was produced in the studio in Inning am Ammersee . The outdoor shots were taken at Hohenschwangau Castle , in Füssen and at Trausnitz Castle . The end credits of the film read: We owe HRH Prince Rupprecht of Bavaria thanks for the permission to record in Hohenschwangau Castle. On August 1, 1994, Little Brother & Little Sister from 1953 was released by Euro Video on VHS. The film has not yet been released on DVD.
