biography
Spence started skiing at the age of six. He competed in his first international competitions in 1999 at the Trofeo Topolino in Italy , where he came second in giant slalom and third in slalom. From December 1999 Spence took part in FIS races , four months later the first appearances in the Nor-Am Cup followed . In December 2000 he won his first FIS race and in January 2001 he came into the points for the first time in the Nor-Am Cup.
From 2002 to 2004 Spence took part in three Junior World Championships and was among the top ten three times: in 2003 he finished eighth in the downhill and in 2004 he was fourth in the Super-G and ninth in the downhill. On December 1, 2002, he made his World Cup debut in the Super-G of Lake Louise . However, he couldn't finish the race. In the next two seasons, three more appearances in the World Cup followed, in which he did not get into the points.
In the Nor-Am Cup, the Canadian made it to the top in the 2002/03 season . With second place in the downhill and third place in the Super-G of Lake Louise, he achieved his first podium places and thus reached fifth place in the Super-G classification and tenth place in the downhill classification. In the 2003-04 season , another podium finish in Super-G followed by Lake Louise and he finished second in this discipline again fifth overall. In the 2004/05 season he achieved four podium places (3 × Super-G and 1 × Slalom) and another five top 10 results, placing him third in the overall classification and second in the slalom and Super-G classification reached.
From the beginning of the 2005/06 season Spence was regularly used in the World Cup, but not yet in the points. He suffered a shoulder injury in the Lake Louise Super-G at the end of November. Much more serious were the consequences of the fall during downhill training in Bormio on December 28, 2005. Spence suffered a fractured tibia and fibula in his right leg and torn ligaments in his knee and was not able to compete for almost three years.
Since the serious injury, Spence only competes in slalom and giant slalom competitions in the World Cup and Nor-Am Cup. He made his comeback on December 2, 2008 in a Nor-Am Cup slalom in Loveland . Just two days later he was back on the podium in the Winter Park slalom . He was then able to classify himself in the top five in most races and, with his two victories in the giant slalom in Nakiska and in the slalom in Lake Placid in the 2008/09 season, he secured victory in these disciplines as well as third place in the overall classification. On March 1, 2009, he won his second World Cup race after the serious injury, the slalom in Kranjska Gora , in 13th place, the first World Cup points. He achieved his best World Cup result so far on December 21, 2009 with twelfth place in the Alta Badia slalom . He was able to repeat this result on January 24, 2010 at the slalom in Kitzbühel . At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , however, he only reached 42nd place in the giant slalom and dropped out in the slalom. In March 2010 he became Canadian champion in giant slalom.
In the 2010/11 season Spence was among the top 20 in four World Cup slaloms , and there were five in the 2011/12 winter . At the 2011 World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , however, he only achieved 38th place in slalom after a serious mistake in the second round. After the 2013-14 season , Spence ended his career.
