history

Bradley Hall is one of the earliest buildings constructed and bears the name of the founder.

The Bradley Polytechnic Institute was founded by philanthropist Lydia Moss Bradley in 1897 in memory of her husband Tobias and their six children, all of whom died prematurely. In memory of their children, the couple had long discussed building an orphanage . Bradley decided instead to build a school with hands-on training. She first bought shares in the Parsons Horological School in LaPorte , Indiana in 1892 and moved them to Peoria. In her will, she stipulated that the school should be expanded after her death and that both classical and real-life subjects should be taught in it.

In October 1896 she met William Rainey Harper, President of the University of Chicago . He persuaded her to carry out her plans while she was still alive. On November 13, 1896, the Bradley Polytechnic Institute was finally established. Bradley provided 7 acres of land, $ 170,000 for buildings and equipment, and $ 30,000 annually for maintenance.

Bradley Hall and Horology Hall followed in April. During the construction phase, 150 students began teaching in 14 faculties on October 4th. The Bradley Polytechnic Institute was officially opened on October 8, 1897. The first graduate was Cora Unland (June 1898).

Originally the study period consisted of four years at the academy and two years in college . By 1899 the school was expanded and had almost 500 students. Among other things, the following was taught:

From 1920 the school abandoned its academy structure and established itself as a four-year college. Over the decades the number of students continued to rise and in 1946 the university was renamed to its current name.
