Bragadiru is a city in Ilfov County in Romania .
location
Bragadiru is located in the Wallachian Plain , on the southwestern outskirts of Bucharest . The center of the Romanian capital is about 12 km away.
history
Bragadiru is a young settlement that was first mentioned in a document in 1830. From 1866 onwards, it was essentially shaped by a beer brewery. This belonged to the entrepreneur Dumitru Marinescu (1842-1915), who gave the brewery the name of the place and later called himself Dumitru Marinescu Bragadiru. He bought land in the village and financed the construction of the town hall, a school and a church. From his villa he had the first telephone line in Romania laid to another brewery in Bucharest that he owned. He initiated the construction of apartments for his employees, a cinema and other leisure facilities.
After the Second World War, the Bragadiru family's brewery and other real estate were nationalized. The place developed into a suburb typical for the area around Bucharest. In December 2005, Bragadiru was officially declared a city.
The brewery went bankrupt after the 1989 revolution . Some of the expropriated buildings were returned to the Bragadiru family. The most important economic sectors are the construction industry as well as trade and services. A confectionery factory and a pharmaceutical company settled there . Around 60% of employees commute to Bucharest every day.
population
At the 2002 census, Bragadiru had 8,165 people, including 8018 Romanians and 119 Roma .
