Chitila is a town in Ilfov County in Romania .

location

Chitila is located in the Wallachian Plain on the Colentina River , directly on the northwestern outskirts of Bucharest . The center of the Romanian capital is about 12 km away.

history

Chitila probably originated in the 15th century. The place was dominated by agriculture for a long time and was owned by the Wallachian noble families Brâncoveanu and Bibescu. The character of the village changed with the increasing spatial expansion of Bucharest - which made Chitila a suburb of the Romanian capital - and with the opening of the Bucharest – Galați – Roman railway line , which runs through Chitila. Since 1882 the railway line to Târgovişte branched off in Chitila , so that the place became a railway junction. A large marshalling yard was built (today Bucharest-Triaj). In 1892 the place became the seat of a community. As a result, Rudeni and some other places were incorporated, which are no longer official districts today. At the beginning of the 20th century there was a temporary military airfield and a flight school for the Romanian army. After the Second World War, the food and wood processing industries established themselves. In 2005 Chitila was declared a city after the majority of the residents voted in favor of it in a referendum.

population

In 1892, 437 residents were registered in Chitila. At the 2002 census, 12,643 people lived in today's city, including 12,360 Romanians , 236 Roma and 10 Germans . In 2011, 12,595 of the 14,184 people identified themselves as Romanians, 547 as Roma, three each as Germans and Magyars, and the rest did not provide any information about their ethnic group.
