Brand Westermann
Brand Westermann (February 1646 - August 20, 1716 in Hanover ) was a German builder . Contrary to earlier attributions , Brand Westermann was not the architect responsible for many of the buildings.
family
Brand was “probably” a descendant of Pastor Johann Westermann († 1585 in Gestorf ). In his second marriage, Brand was married to Anna Catharina , the daughter of the organist of the Kreuzkirche , Ludolph Schildt , the brother of Melchior Schildt . Brand's son Johann Heinrich Westermann (1678–1726) also became a master builder and from around 1705 also worked in the court building management and until his retirement in 1724, first as an assistant and then as his father's successor.
Career
According to the current state of research, nothing is known about Brand Westermann's training.
1666–1670 Brand was - under the "direction" of Johann Duve - technical director of the Neustädter Hof- und Stadtkirche St. Johannis .
Before 1674 until 1682 Westermann was "apparently" also a construction clerk for the Hanover war chancellery. After he succeeded the ducal building clerk Balthasar Ernst Weinberg in 1674, in this position he became the most important employee of the court building manager Hieronimo Sartorio and his various successors. He oversaw numerous farm building projects, but occasionally also worked for other authorities and private clients, sometimes outside of Hanover.
Westermann worked for Chamber President Otto Grote, for example, or for Prime Minister Franz Ernst von Platen , for whom he was involved in building a palace in Calenberger Neustadt and, after the architect Johann Peter Wachter died in 1690, according to his plans from 1698 and until 1702 the Lindener Schloss was built.
From 1692 to 1701 Westermann was involved in the construction of the new tower of the Neustadt church. He was also buried in this (his grave slab is now to the left of the south portal).
From 1713 he worked, together with Johann Christian Böhm and Johann Caspar Borchmann , in the execution of the Hanover State Archives , which were built until 1719/1721 , at the same time the last state building before King George I moved to the Kingdom of Great Britain .
