Brandis is the name of an old Hildesheim family who immigrated there with Hans Brandes in 1444. The reliable line of trunks begins with Cord Brandis zu Alfeld (Leine) in 1383/1384, who is perhaps identical to the councilor Cord Brandes zu Gronau (Leine) near Alfeld, mentioned in 1366 .

The Lower Saxon nobility dynasty must be distinguished from the South Tyrolean nobility dynasty of the Counts of Brandis , which is still flourishing today, and the Swiss nobility dynasty of the Lords of Brandis, which died out in 1512 .
