The brewery Scherdel Bier GmbH & Co. KG is an independent subsidiary of the Kulmbacher Brauerei AG . The brewery produces 100,000 hectoliters of beer every year.

history

Georg Matthäus Scherdel came to Hof with his family from Schwarzenbach an der Saale in 1831 . As a baker, he understood how to deal with yeast and thus the fermentation process of the brewery. He dedicated himself intensively and exclusively to brewing beer in communal breweries in order to be able to supply the surrounding villages. Since the communal breweries were not always available to him as desired, he built his own brewery together with his son Bernhard in 1862, consisting of a brewhouse and a brewery at Unterkotzauer Weg 9, in the vicinity of which Scherdel owned a rock cellar.

Georg Matthäus Scherdel was the first Hofer brewer who transported his beers to Prussia and Saxony with horse-drawn carts and carts of oxen. This decisively favored the development of the city of Hof into a beer city. The business was carried on from generation to generation in the family.

With the introduction of the Pilsner beer Scherdel Edelhell in the 1930s the boom of the brewery began. The good development was interrupted by the Second World War and above all the sales areas in Central Germany were lost. This loss was made up for with a new orientation to the south.

In the course of the 1970s and 1980s, the private brewery developed into a regionally important provider in northeast Bavaria.

For over 20 years, the beers of the Scherdel Brewery have received awards for their quality in competitions organized by the German Agricultural Society . V. (DLG), so far five gold and three silver medals .

In early 2003 the brewery ran into financial difficulties and had to file for bankruptcy. On October 1, 2003, Kulmbacher Brauerei AG took over the Scherdel Brewery in the course of insolvency proceedings. It will continue to run as an independent brewery in Hof.

In 2006 the Scherdel brewery celebrated its 175th anniversary. The event was used as an opportunity to equip the Scherdel beer bottles with new, traditional labels. In addition, the company logo was redesigned. Michael Krasser (former sales manager of the Kulmbacher brewery) has been managing director of the Scherdel brewery since June 2007.

Scherdel has been producing the so-called Schlappenbier for the Hofer Schlappentag since 2011 .
