The Kulmbacher Brauerei Aktien-Gesellschaft , based in Kulmbach, is a German brewery company that was founded in 1846 as Reichelbräu by Johann W. Reichel, Johann K. Scheiding and Johann M. Hübner. In 1895 it was converted into a stock company.

The company has expanded since 1980, with the Sandlerbräu and Mönchshof-Bräu companies adding further beer brands to the range in 1980 and 1984 .

In 1986 the Schörghuber Group took over 49.9% of the share capital. In 1987 the production of Kapuziner wheat beer began. In the 1990s, the Sternquell Brewery Plauen, the Braustolz Brewery Chemnitz , the Ersten Kulmbacher Aktienbrauerei (EKU) and a majority stake in Bad Brambacher Mineralquellen were taken over. EKU, Reichel, Sandler and Mönchshof have been united in the Kulmbacher Brewery AG since 1996. After Erste Kulmbacher Actienbrauerei Aktiengesellschaft went bankrupt , the business operations were transferred to Markgrafenbräu GmbH and renamed Kulmbacher EKU Brauerei GmbH .

In 1996 and 1997, Kulmbacher achieved nationwide fame through “The Long Kulmbacher Film Night”. This consisted of three consecutive commercial-free Hollywood films on the private television station SAT1 . The format was moderated by Thomas Gottschalk .

In 2002 the beverage output exceeded three million hectoliters for the first time after commissioning a new clip lock system and filter system.

In 2002 the Coburg breweries Sturm and Scheidmantel were taken over. They were merged to form the Coburg brewery, but the beers from Sturm and Scheidmantel were then sold under their own names for a few years.

Since 2003, with the private brewery Scherdel in Hof and the majority of shares (90.7%) in Würzburger Hofbräu AG , two companies have again been integrated into the Kulmbacher Group.

The Kulmbacher Brauerei AG has the city coat of arms in its company logo. The Reichelbräu was approved by the Kulmbach city council in 1926. Six years later, the first Reichelbräu Edelherb appeared on the German market.

Kulmbacher has been the official beer of 1. FC Nürnberg since the 2006/2007 season and can be served in the Max Morlock Stadium . The brewery also acquired the advertising rights and is allowed to advertise with the association. The brewery organizes the Kulmbacher Beer Week (also known as the Kulmbacher Beer Festival), which attracts 100,000 visitors every year. The beer week is organized by the city of Kulmbach and the Kulmbacher brewery. The first Kulmbach Beer Week took place in 1939. It was initially organized by the Kulmbacher Verkehrsverband, who wanted to use this campaign to advertise the city and its achievements in the food industry such as beer and sausage products.

On 6 . May 2009 at around 1.30 p.m. during demolition work in the storage cellar of the Kulmbacher brewery, a major fire broke out . At the beginning of April 2009 it was decided to demolish the 44 meter high tower of the former EKU brewery in EKU Street, built in 1968 . The cause of the fire was flexible work that initially led to a light fire that could not be extinguished immediately. 17 people were injured in the fire, 13 of whom suffered smoke inhalation . The burned-out building was later demolished.

With effect from January 12, 2010, the shares were no longer listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange . With effect from November 30, 2010, the listing in the regulated market of the Munich Stock Exchange followed . Since then, the company's shares have been listed in the m: access segment of the Munich Stock Exchange.

Markus Stodden has been the spokesman for the Executive Board since January 1, 2013 and is responsible for sales and marketing. Mathias Keil has been appointed to the Supervisory Board on October 1, 2018 and is responsible for finance and technology.

In 2015 the trademark rights of the insolvent Brauhaus Schweinfurt were taken over, three years later (September 2018) the Kulmbacher took over the trademark rights of the traditional Erlangen brewery Kitzmann .
