The Brebach is a 3.5 kilometer long orographically left tributary of the Spreeler Bach in the river system of the Wupper . In its lower reaches it formed the border between the Rhineland and Westphalia . This border situation existed as a dividing line between the Duchy of Berg and the County of Mark since the late Middle Ages .
Location and topography
The stream rises at 357 meters above sea level. NN north of the Radevormwald town of Jakobsholt and initially flows northwest. In front of the Singerhof it forms the border between Radevormwald and Ennepetal for a short distance . Here the Elberfeld line of the Bergische Landwehr, protected as a cultural monument, crosses the brook, which now takes over the border function for the time being and releases the Brebach into the Ennepetal area. From the beginning of the 14th century, the Elberfeld line served as border security for the two territories of Berg and Mark.
Parallel to the Landwehr , the stream flows in a south-westerly direction to the Radevormwalder Hofschaft Brebach of the same name , where with the Landwehr the city and district boundaries jump over the stream again. The brook flows north in a narrow arc from Brebach. The Landwehr approaches the stream again and crosses it, while the border finally follows the stream.
The turning point of the creek in a southwestern direction marks the northernmost point of the Oberbergischer Kreis and the administrative district of Cologne . The Brebach empties at 253 meters above sea level in the dual village of Spreeler Mühle / Griesensiepen . NN in the Spreeler Bach .
The most important tributaries are the Singer Siefen, the Birkerbach, the Stöckenbach, the Stückenbach and the Brebachsiefen.
