The Breitenbach , also called Seebach in the upper reaches , is a 7 km long brook in the central Odenwald on the district of Markt Kirchzell in the Bavarian district of Miltenberg , which joins the Teufelsbach coming from the south and the Gabelbach below the hamlet of Breitenbach . Its upper course on the submarket of Watterbach was or is also called Seebach .

geography

course

The Breitenbach rises about one and a half kilometers southwest of the Kirchzell parish village Breitenbuch in the forest, in which it also remains for the first three quarters of its course, apart from shorter valley directions. At first it flows south and runs through two ponds of 2.7 km in quick succession. Then it turns to the southeast, finally after almost half of its run to the south-southeast. Until there, without any other tributaries than short channels from hillside springs, his first more than one kilometer long tributary from the chestnut valley coming from the southeast flows to him only about one and a half kilometers before his kilometers in the now open meadow under forest slopes .

The Breitenbach (front) merges with the Teufelsbach (right) to the Gabelbach (back)

A little less than a kilometer away is the first and last settlement on the left of the river, the Kirchzeller hamlet Breitenbach. The only significant, almost 5 km long tributary Dörnbach , which almost doubles the catchment area of the Breitenbach, flows there from the north . About half a kilometer farther down the valley it flows with the coming of the south Teufelsbach for Gabelbach together, which keeps on running about in inflow direction of the Devil Bach. The brook association is located between the Mudau hamlet of Ernsttal in the south and the church village of Ottorfszell in the north, a district of Kirchzell, and right next to the L 2311 / St 2311, which here on the Teufelsbach – Gabelsbach valley axis in the middle of the Odenwald marks the border between Baden-Württemberg in Crosses south and Bavaria in the north.

Since the Breitenbach, which is less important for long-distance traffic, is slightly larger than the Teufelsbach, which is more important in terms of traffic, in terms of its catchment area, it is considered hydrologically as the main branch of the Gabelbach, despite its less constant direction.

Catchment area

The Breitenbach drains 18.3 km² of the central Odenwald via a series of rivers running northwards to the Main . Its large tributary Dörnbach contributes over 40% to this area. The Breitenbach runs very close to the western, later on the southern edge of the catchment area, which is therefore heavily left-leaning, while the Dörnbach runs roughly from its center to its eastern edge and from there along it to its mouth.

The contour of the catchment area has roughly the shape of a rectangle parallel to the compass direction, from which the northwest corner would have been strongly pulled out. Its corner in the southeast is at the mouth, its northwest corner about one and a half kilometers north of the origin of the Breitenbach.

The largely poorly developed north-eastern watershed borders the catchment area of the Waldbach , which flows into the Gabelsbach. Near the Dörnbach, the Gabelsbach runs northwards behind the eastern one, which is why it is prominently designed as a ridge, albeit rather low. The Kolli ( 547.5  m above sea level ), the highest point in the entire Bavarian Odenwald , lies on the short southern border of the drainage area towards the Teufelsbach, which follows the state border between Bavaria on this side and Baden-Württemberg on the other side very precisely . The western watershed finally runs in the southern section, a little behind the Hessian land border , on the edge of a plateau around Hesselbach , which largely drains to the Itter , which runs south to the Neckar ; it is part of the major watershed between the Main and Neckar through the Odenwald. Further to the north, the ridge to the Itter area becomes narrower and is again in Bavaria, the Itter-Quellbach Euterbach flows southwards in an almost parallel course to the Breitenbach . In the central area between the middle reaches of Breitenbach and Dörnbach, the highest Finkenbuschkopf ( 541.7  m above sea level ) almost reaches the summit level of the Kolli.

Besides the hamlet of Breitenbach at the mouth of the Dörnbach, the only town in the catchment area is the Kirchzeller hamlet of Dörnbach at its middle course. The latitude book closest to the source is just across the north-eastern watershed. Around 90% of the catchment area is forested. The greater part of the open corridor lies on the plateau between the upper Breitenbach and the Dörnbach origin southwest of Breitenbuch, the remaining part mainly in the lower Breitenbach and Dörnbachaue.

Source of the Breitenbach about 1.6 km southwest of Kirchzell - Breitenbuch at about 495  m above sea level. NHN in the forest. The stream initially flows south and makes a slow left curve of about 90 ° to the mouth.

  • RiverIcon-SmallLake.svgGoing through two ponds at a short distance on 485- 480  m above sea level. Above sea level , approx. 1.6 ha and approx. 1.1 ha.
  • Slope inlet, from the right to about 355  m above sea level. NHN , approx. 0.1 km. Rises from the Rotklingenbrunnen at about 380  m above sea level. NHN . The stream flows east-south-east from around here to the mouth.
  • Dispute well below 350  m above sea level. NHN at the near right foot of the slope, just before a one and a half hectare meadow clearing. The stream flows here at less than 345  m above sea level. NHN .
  • Bach from the Kastaniental , from the right and southwest to about 270  m above sea level. NHN approx. 500 meters after the start of the meadow corridor in the Aue, approx. 1.4 km and approx. 1.0 km². Arises at about 400  m above sea level. NHN under the saddle between Kolli and Hohberg .
  • Dörnbach , from the left and finally north to below 255  m above sea level. NHN near the Kirchzeller hamlet Breitenbach , approx. 4.9 km and 7.9 km². Rises about one and a half kilometers west of the Kirchzeller hamlet Dörnbach from a hillside spring below 410  m above sea level. NHN . At this tributary, the Breitenbach itself has a length of approx. 6.7 km and a catchment area of approx. 10.4 km².

The confluence of the Breitenbach from the left and, last but not least, west with the right Teufelsbach, coming from the south, to the Gabelbach , which then continues north-northeast. The Breitenbach has a length of 7.3 km and a catchment area of 7.3 km² behind it.

Mud river system

history

The western watershed between Breitenbach and Euterbach follows the route of the Upper German-Raetian Limes very precisely . After being offset to the west a little to the south over the ridge of the Heidenberg , which the aforementioned L 2311 crosses as a pass road, the line was able to swivel back to its north-north-westerly major direction.
