The Itter is a 28 km long river in the Odenwald , which has its source in Hessen and flows into the Neckar near Eberbach in Baden-Württemberg from the right. In the upper sections it also bears the names Euterbach and Itterbach .

etymology

According to one theory, Itter is a word of Celtic origin and means something like water or flowing water . According to another theory, the name Itter goes back to the Latin-Indo-European word itera , which means “the water from the height”.

Other German toponyms were also derived from the same root , e.g. B. Eiterbach , Eyterbach , Euterbach (see below) and Eutersee .

geography

course

The Itter in Schöllenbach. On the left the Hessian side with the spring church and a historical washing area. Right the Baden side with Badisch-Schöllenbach , a district of Eberbach.

The stream rises as Euterbach on the southern slope of 540  m above sea level. NHN high Rote Buckels in the Hessian Odenwald in the Würzberg district and initially flows approximately in a southerly direction. In one section it is also the border with Bavaria . From the inflow of the Schöllenbach it is first called Itterbach . From here on it is the border river between Baden-Württemberg in the east and Hesse in the west. A little before Kailbach, the Galmbach flows into it from the left . The Itterbach then runs for about 2 km in the Hessian region. A little later at Friedrichsdorf it takes on the Fahrbach again from the left and is again a border river - again between Hessen in the west and Baden-Württemberg in the east - to about the confluence of the right Sensbach after 20.3 km near the Gaimühle, from where it comes to Itter is called.

From here on, Itter finally remains in Baden-Württemberg. A little later it is fed from the left by the Reisenbach , to which the Höllbach flows shortly before from the left . The Itter then moves south to the northern slopes of the highest Odenwaldberg Katzenbuckel ( 626.8  m above sea level ), turns abruptly in front of it to the southwest and flows into the Ittalsperre . This leaves it in two branches, the Itter itself and the about 3 km long upper water canal that runs on the lower slope to the left of it . At the canal crossing to the Itter power plant on the left bank, the river has already reached the northern parts of the Eberbach settlement, the underwater of the power plant now continues in a wide bed in the right floodplain.

Both arms are here already in the downward half of an old northeastern Neckar loop, of which the 236.7  m above sea level. NN high Umlaufberg Ohrsberg is left in the middle of the otherwise rather flat central urban area of Eberbach. Towards this, the canal flows back from the right, and shortly afterwards the long Holderbach flows through the urban area. After only another half a kilometer, the Itter flows into the river at the foot of the 391  m above sea level after a total stretch of about 28 km . NN high Itterbergs immediately on your right at 122  m above sea level. NN from the right into the Neckar , which approximately here reaches the northernmost point of its course.
