Brian Kendrick (born May 29, 1979 in Fairfax , Virginia ) is an American wrestler . He is best known for his appearances in World Wrestling Entertainment and Total Nonstop Action Wrestling .

Career

Beginnings / Independent

In October 1999, Kendrick made his wrestling debut when he faced the "American Dragon" Bryan Danielson with the Texas Wrestling Alliance . A short time later he was also engaged by the independent promotions Ring of Honor and Ultimate Pro Wrestling . In addition, Kendrick also competed in Pro Wrestling ZERO-ONE in Japan .

World Wrestling Entertainment

In 2003, Kendrick made his debut at World Wrestling Entertainment when he competed there under the ring name Spanky . He was merged with Paul London to a tag team , which was only used in the lower combat map. In early 2004, Kendrick asked for the early termination of his WWE contract.

On June 28, 2005, Kendrick and the WWE signed a new contract. Kendrick returned to the shows as Paul London's tag team partner and both appeared in a few matches on the TV formats RAW and SmackDown! on.

From February 2006 the team Kendrick – London was tied into a feud program with MNM (consisting of Johnny Nitro , Joey Mercury and Melina Perez ). London and Kendrick have now been used in the top combat map. Both of them were able to win the tag team title at the PPV WWE Judgment Day on May 21, 2006 and hold it for almost 12 months. It wasn't until April 20, 2007 that they both lost the titles on SmackDown! To Deuce 'n Domino . In the course of the annual line-up change of the WWE roster , the "Draft Lottery", London and Kendrick were switched to RAW. In August 2004, Kendrick signed a contract with Total Nonstop Action Wrestling . But contrary to expectations, he was only used there twice.

On January 17, 2010, Kendrick returned to TNA using his real name Brian Kendrick . At Destination X on July 10, 2011 he won the TNA X Division Championship for the first time from Abyss . He lost the title at No Surrender on September 11, 2011 to Austin Aries . On February 27, 2012, after three months without TV appearances, his release was announced.

Return to the WWE

After spending two years with New Japan Pro Wrestling after his release from TNA , he returned to WWE in 2014 as a coach. In addition to his activity as a trainer, he also appeared as a wrestler in the WWE NXT expansion league . At NXT, he mainly helped develop new talent. Among other things, he competed against Solomon Crowe and Finn Bálor .

In 2016 he also took part in a tournament organized by the WWE, the Cruiserweight Classic . On June 23, 2016, he defeated Raul Mendoza in the first round. On July 14th, he defeated Tony Nese in the second round. On August 26, he lost in the quarterfinals against Kota Ibushi and was eliminated from the Cruiserweight Classic . On September 19, 2016, he returned to the main roster on Raw . On the same evening he won a fatal four-way match against Rich Swann, Gran Metalik, and Cedric Alexander, with which he secured a match for the WWE Cruiserweight Championship at the major event Clash of Champions against TJ Perkins , which he lost.

In the following period, the feud between Perkins and Kendrick continued. On October 30, 2016, Kendrick defeated TJ Perkins at Hell in a Cell to win the WWE Cruiserweight Championship . He gave the title to Rich Swann on November 29, 2016 at the premiere of the WWE cruiserweight show 205 Live.
