Brighton is a village in the west of the US -amerikanischen state of Illinois . The place is for the most part in Macoupin County and a smaller part in Jersey County . In 2000 Brighton had 2,196 inhabitants, an official estimate in 2008 was 2,376 inhabitants.
Brighton is located in the eastern part of the Greater St. Louis metropolitan area, known as Metro-East , around the city of St. Louis in neighboring Missouri .

The Illinois State Route 111 and the Illinois State Route 267 as well as a railway line of the BNSF Railway run through Brighton .

history
Brighton was founded in the early 19th century when settlers began turning prairie lands into farmland. A post office was opened in 1837, and the settlement was elevated to a town in 1869. Brighton is also known for its historical museum.
In the center of the city was a prisoner-of-war camp of the Union Army for prisoners of the Southern Army .

In the 2000 census, the population was 2,196. These were distributed over 816 households in 608 families. The population density was 526.6 / km². There were 855 buildings, which corresponds to a building density of 205.0 / km².
