Live and act

Spiegelman received a BA from the College of William and Mary in 1974 and a Ph.D. from Princeton University in 1978. in biochemistry . He worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology . In 1982 he received a first professorship (assistant professor) for pharmacology at Harvard Medical School and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute , in 1987 he became an associate professor for biochemistry and molecular pharmacology. Since 1991 he has held a full professorship, from 1993 for cell biology . Since 2008 he has been Stanley J. Korsmeyer Professor of Cell Biology and Medicine at Harvard Medical School . In addition, he has been Director of the Center for Energy Metabolism and Chronic Disease at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute since 2006 .

Spiegelman deals with the transcriptional basis of the energy metabolism of mammals, in particular adipogenesis ( differentiation of adipocytes ). The nuclear receptor PPARγ was identified as the central regulator of the differentiation of fat cells and insulin resistance and its importance for the growth of epithelial cells was shown - also in cancer forms that originate from these cells. PPARγ ligands have been tested as anti-cancer agents. Further work dealt with PGC-1 as a coactivator of transcription in various processes, especially gluconeogenesis in the liver .
