Buddy Arnold

Buddy Arnold (actually Arnold Buddy Grishaver , born April 30, 1926 in the Bronx , New York City , † November 9, 2003 in Los Angeles ) was an American jazz musician ( tenor saxophone , bass saxophone , clarinet , bass clarinet ).

Life

Arnold played in various New York big bands in the late 1940s and early 1950s , including the orchestras of Joe Marsala , Georgie Auld , Herbie Fields , George Williams , Tex Beneke , Claude Thornhill , Buddy DeFranco, and Jerry Wald ; first recordings were made in 1944 with the Bob Chester Band. In January 1956 he had the opportunity to record the album Wailing under his own name for ABC-Paramount , on which Dick Sherman , Frank Rehak , Gene Quill , Dave Schildkraut , Teddy Kotick , Shadow Wilson and Osie Johnson played. The arrangements were made by Nat Pierce , Bob Brookmeyer and Phil Urso . He also worked during this time a. a. with Phil Sunkel and Warren Covington . He was a member of the Stan Kenton Orchestra in the late 1950s and early 1960s . In the field of jazz he was involved in 31 recording sessions between 1944 and 2002.

Arnold was a drug addict from 1950; his heroin addiction resulted in a total of 34 detentions for violating the American Narcotics Act, including a detention that took him to San Quentin State Prison in 1981 . After his release from prison in the early 1990s, Arnold and his wife started a support program for drug addicted musicians called the Musician's Assistance Program (MAP) in Los Angeles , which was supported by the record industry. With his aid program, for example, Arnold supported drummer Erik Sandin from the Californian punk rock band NOFX in 1992 to successfully overcome his heroin addiction during a two-month hospital stay. Arnold died in 2003 of complications from open heart surgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center .
