Federal Student Union Conference

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A Federal Student Council ( BuFaTa for short ) or Federal Student Council ( BuFaK or BuFaKo ) is a voluntary nationwide representation of the interests of students in one or more subject areas at technical colleges and / or universities in Germany. The organizations get their name from the regular meetings at which delegates from the local student councils usually come together.

Story and purpose

Until the 1960s, subject-related student interests were represented by the professional associations of what was then the Association of German Student Unions (VDS). After this had temporarily collapsed in the wake of the 1968 student riots and did not set up any professional associations after that, numerous student council representatives formed new associations at the federal level since the 1970s in order to represent their common interests. In contrast to the earlier VDS professional associations, these are now formally outside the student umbrella organization fzs , especially since more and more student bodies are cross-border, i.e. H. Organize including Austrian and Swiss universities.

Until the end of the 1990s, most of the federal student council meetings were more informal, primarily aimed at getting to know one another and exchanging information. Since the introduction of the Bologna Process, they have become increasingly important in terms of higher education policy. B. in the accreditation of graded courses of study ( Bachelor / Master ) and, in addition to the fzs and the state student representatives, belong to the group of organizations that are allowed to send student representatives to the accrediting agencies and their expert commissions as well as to the Accreditation Council . Federal student council meetings are also generally asked for and recognized by the respective faculty meetings and professional associations (e.g. VDI ) as discussion partners.

organization

The level of organization of the individual federal student council meetings is quite different and ranges from informal meetings to a registered association with a permanent secretariat.

The representatives' meetings, which take place every year or every six months, are alternately organized by a local student council. The meetings usually last several days and often include specialist excursions. University policy statements are drawn up for other committees, such as the relevant faculty day , and delegates are often elected for this purpose. Topics are usually subject-specific student issues such as B. the further development of the courses , exchange about admission and accreditation procedures.

Furthermore, many federal student councils send representatives to the meta-conference of student councils, or MeTaFa for short.
